ARC 306 - Augusta Bus Stop

Project Summary:

The city of Augusta, Maine, being the only state capital in the country with no form of public art, is looking for innovative and imaginative ways to incorporate art into their historic downtown setting without disrupting the character of the town. Because of this, the project will seek to not only shelter individuals waiting for their bus, but more importantly, be sculpted into a piece of public art that will blend into the landscape of the city.

Inspiration for the bus stop came from two very sculptural precedents. The first is an exhibit designed by Richard Serra in which he uses COR-TEN steel to shape a series of intertwining spaces. The second is the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion designed by Snohetta. In the pavilion, fir timbers were sculpted into flowing benches on which to sit and observe the wild reindeer that roam the hillsides of Hjerkinn.
